Bharatha Natyam Indian Classical Dance
Bharatha Natyam is a form of classical dance originating in South India over three thousand years ago.Bharatha Natyam is the combination of:
- BHA – Bhava (expression)
- RA – Raga (Music)
- TA – Tala (Rhythm)
Bharatha Natyam was originally performed at Hindu temples as part of daily rituals and religious or festive occasions. At the time the dance was considered an offering to the deities.
Bharatha Natyam is known for its purity, graceful movements, rhythmic music, lively footwork and sculpturesque poses.
The dancer strives for Arangetram (graduation performance) in Bharatha Natyam. In Tamil Aranga means raised stage and Etram means climbing. It takes many years of practice and dedication for the student to be ready for Arangetram. The Guru will advise when the student is ready for this final performance.
Master Director
Inpa Xavier is the Master Director of Bharatha Natyam Indian classical dance for the Bharatha Narthanalaya School of Dance. Inpa Xavier studied for many years in Madras, India under the direction of Padmashree Adyar K. Lakshman of Kalashetra, Madras. She performed her Arangetram in Madras in 1970 and began her career in teaching Bharatha Natyam. Over the years she has taught hundreds of students in Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia and Canada. Inpa Xavier has been the Master Director of the Bharatha Narthanalaya School of Dance in Canada for the past 22 years. In this time period many of her students have performed their Arangetram under her direction. Her students have performed in numerous shows, competitions, fundraising, cultural and political events showcasing their talents.
